A lot.

Some of them are interesting, some of them are typical, and others are just, Really?

So, we’re going to answer several of them today.

The Wholeshare.com platform is an extension of a larger conversation about how to get more good food – sustainable, organic, local, and ethical – into the hands of more people at reasonable prices. Our industrial food system imposes barriers across geography, subsidies, policy, price, race, and class that affect a consumer’s access and right to the kinds of foods currently available to our members.

The Wholeshare model offers a level of transparency, accountability, and accessibility that you won’t find at most local and national grocery stores and chains.

Bed-Stuy Bounty is not aiming to be the be all, end all for Bed-Stuy’s grocery needs, but we are a game-changer in shifting our neighbors’ relationship with food and how they buy groceries.

We believe that everyone should have a choice in how they participate in the food system. Every time you spend money on food, you are placing a vote with your food dollars that speaks to what you value.

We believe that you should continue to shop at and participate in all the food buying models that are available to you – supermarket chains health food stores, farmers markets,  Community supported agriculture, and even the bodegas.

And especially those businesses that are in Bed-Stuy.

By supporting all of these models, you keep people working and you contribute to your local economy.

What we would like to see is more residents stepping up and demanding better quality in product and in service in Bed-Stuy establishments, but that is another conversation for another blog post.

By working directly with the same distributors that our favorite natural and organic grocers have, we’re learning firsthand how distribution works and how to work around the setbacks of not having a brick and mortar storefront.

Some people think Bed-Stuy is a Food Desert and that we’re providing a solution.

Bed-Stuy is not a food desert and here is a spot on response to anyone who’d like to challenge us on the semantics/designation.

What Bed-Stuy Bounty is doing is rounding out the options built by long-time community members, such as Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger, Neighbors Together, Brooklyn Rescue Mission/Malcolm X Community Farmers Market, Hattie Carthan Garden/Community Markets, St. John’s Bread and Life, Child Development Support Corporation, and the host of pantries, soup kitchens, community chefs, and community gardeners who have maintained the neighborhood’s open spaces for over thirty years, increasing food access for all.

As they should! Seriously?

Some people wonder why we’re necessary when companies like this one delivers seven days week.

Again, we believe in buyer choice. And since several of our members order from them with no conflicts already, we don’t have any. Well yes we do, but, that’s also another story for another blog post.

Bed-Stuy has a food co-op.

Hmm, technically, no we don’t.

That food coop is on the border of our neighborhood and many people do not want to shop there for several reasons.

Side bar: When Melissa (Bed-Stuy Bounty’s Founder) was growing up, the block the co-op is on was considered Bed-Stuy, but now it isn’t, so…

But that’s beside the point, considering that at least 4,000 Bed-Stuy residents trek three miles to that other co-op.

And again, people have choices. Co-op models work for who they work for, and for those it doesn’t work for, they have us.

Participation requires blind faith, so how is this viable?

We have stories upon stories of people buying bagged produce or meat and getting home only to find that it was molded and spoiled. So, it works the same for us ordering online as it would if you’d unknowingly made a bad purchase in person.

Buying in bulk doesn’t make sense for people who live in small spaces.

This statement always amuses us, considering that buying in bulk means that you buy only the amount that you need. This means that our members can choose to buy a quarter pound to fifty pounds of whatever they want, because that is what buying in bulk means.

We exclude a subset of the population, specifically, SNAP recipients.

That’s true, and that is not our fault.

The Wholeshare.com platform is online and we don’t hold any inventory. Since you are not allowed to make online purchases using SNAP benefits, we can’t serve that population.

But, if someone wants to generously make it so that SNAP recipients can participate, they are invited to call Melissa at 347-927-2855 to discuss the matter further.

1 bunch rainbow or red chard, large stems discarded, leaves roughly chopped

3 tablespoons lemon juice
